Message from the Director

The Research Institute for International Society and Culture is tasked with promoting research on a variety of regional, social and global topics related – but not limited to – welfare, international culture and global interdependence. Initially named the Socio-Cultural Research Institute, it was established in 1997 following a reorganization of its predecessor, Chisoken; the General Regional Societal Research Center (established in 1989).

Today’s world is facing numerous global challenges ranging from climate change, natural disasters, food and resource shortages, to conflicts and human rights abuses. To this end, at the UN Summit in September 2015, International Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted and states and other members are working towards their acceptance and implementation.

Building on the previous 30 years of work starting from the Chisoken, the RIISC has endeavored to actively encourage research from both local and global perspectives through a multifaceted approach, promoting project-based research, collaborative activities with governmental and other research centers and sponsoring seminars and lectures.

RIISC will continue to strive to contribute to finding solutions to some of our most pressing local, regional and global issues and encourage research aimed at achieving a more sustainable society and future.
